How to Get the Most Out of Your Vacuum Cleaner
Have you ever dropped an earring or something small that you just can't find on the floor? House cleaning expert Petya Holevich offers up this tip for finding those tiny items. Place a sock over your vacuum's hose and secure it with a hair tie or rubber band. You can then scoot it across the floor, and once it's found, it will stick to the sock instead of ending up in the vacuum.
Before vacuuming, pick up any items lying on the floor that will be in the way. Small and lightweight objects that can easily be sucked up by mistake. Larger items, like big pieces of debris and other objects that are too big for your vacuum to suck up should also be picked up. Sometimes it's a good idea to do a quick sweep before vacuuming; I have teenage daughters with a lot of thick, long hair, so before they vacuum their bedrooms and bathroom, I make them sweep it first so that all of that hair doesn't get tangled up in the brush. It saves me the frustration of having to cut away a mess of hair stuck on the vacuum's brush later.
You can vacuum and freshen the air in a room at the same time if you dip a cotton ball in your favorite essential oil and place it in the canister of your vacuum. Adding a teaspoon of cinnamon powder can also combat the lingering pet smells that live inside the vacuum canister.
If you're using your vacuum cleaner's attachment to clean overhead, start cleaning from the top to the bottom of the room, so that any falling dust ends up on the dirty floor instead of your already vacuumed floor. And don't forget to vacuum under the couch and couch cushions, windowsills, blinds, curtains, mattresses, and baseboards at least every few months to cut back on dust in your home and to help alleviate floating allergens.
