For Nate Berkus & Jeremiah Brent, the holidays are all about family traditions. With two kids under age 10, the couple spends a lot of time focused on creating "core memories."

"The holidays are a real opportunity for us to be centered as a family and make memories that the kids will remember for years," Berkus told Parade Home & Garden in an exclusive interview.

The family's traditions, not surprisingly, start with decorating. While the pair are known for a love of neutrals, they embrace a slightly more playful approach to decking the halls. "Because our color palette is pretty tight around the holidays, we give the kids little mini trees," says Berkus, "[Our daughter] Poppy's is pink foil in her bedroom, and [our son] Oscar's is orange."

The family also incorporates one of their favorite pastimes, building LEGO sets, into their holiday decor.

"As parents, we're always looking for ways to do activities that everybody is involved in and interested in," says Berkus, who, along with Brent, has partnered with LEGO to promote its holiday decorating sets this season. "This year we're going to build the LEGO Icon sets, they have these great wreaths and garlands, so there will be some playfulness to it. We're not as tough as we pretend to be."

"For us, it's all about getting the whole family to participate," adds Brent. We're always traveling, and the holidays are the one time when we're completely still. We treasure that time more than anything, closing the doors and just being in our home together in our own little bubble. I honestly cannot wait for it."

One thing that gets the family out of the bubble, though, is their Christmas tree

"We live in New York City, and one thing that is incredibly inconvenient, but really meaningful and special is that we walk to the Christmas tree lot in our neighborhood, and we carry back our tree—the four of us," says Berkus. "And, you know, I've asked a thousand times about delivery, but that's not our family tradition. Our family tradition is to walk it through the streets of New York City, and the kids are kind of giggling behind us and we cross the streets trying to avoid cabs and all of that. But, we go get our tree and we bring it home, and it's one of things that the kids really look forward to every year."
