Who is Jasmine Roth? 25 Things You Didn't Know About the HGTV Star
Jasmine Roth is largely an open book.
The HGTV star has chronicled much of her professional and personal lives for her fans and followers, including her personal physical and mental health journeys, the births of her daughters, her cross-country move and more—but there's still a lot about her that you might not know.
The Virginia native and founder of Built Custom Homes has starred in Hidden Potential, Help! I Wrecked My House, Barbie Dream House Challenge, Battle on the Mountain and Rock the Block (to name a few!). Roth has gone through a lot of personal and professional changes within the last decade, with more big developments to come—and her childhood made that possible. Roth comes from a family with more than one divorce and several moves, making her more adaptable than most.
“Basically, what I do now is I move around, move furniture, set up spaces and rooms and organize things ... I think that life experience and moving around so much as a kid helped me in my career,” she told Locale Magazine. “I’m just innately comfortable with moving things.”
And, obviously, with building things! Get to know Jasmine Roth and how she learned to "build her happy."

25 Fun Facts About Jasmine Roth
1. She's a Virgo.
Roth was born on Sept. 17, 1984.
2. She often travels on her birthday.
For her big 3-0, Roth and a dozen of her pals rocked traditional garb and went to the opening of Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany.
3. Jasmine Roth got an early start in building houses ... sort of!
"I grew up in Virginia, and my dad had a general knowledge of carpentry,” Roth told HGTV. “When you live in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself building stuff because there's nothing else to do. I grew up building treehouses, really cool playhouses, beautiful sheds, making furniture and that kind of stuff with my dad in the garage.”
4. Her first job wasn't building houses, but building muscles.
Roth was an instructor at a Curves Fitness in a rural Virginia strip mall.
5. She and her husband were friends first.
Roth and her husband, Brett, met in college and moved in together platonically in 2005. Their friendship eventually blossomed into romance, and they tied the knot on Sept. 7, 2013.
"To say we’ve 'grown up together' would be an understatement and it’s wild to think that we’re actually just getting started," she wrote to Brett in a sweet Instagram tribute on their 11th anniversary. "And even after all these years, I can’t wait to see what’s next."

6. Jasmine Roth's design and building career began in 2010.
Jasmine and Brett, having no building experience, purchased two plots of land in Huntington Beach, California, together in 2010 with the intentions of building their dream home together on one and using the other as an investment property.
They hired builders to work on their home, but quickly learned that developing property was really hard to do as a side hustle.
"Our builder started asking a lot of questions that we couldn’t answer and since we were both working full-time in other jobs, being home developers on the weekend was starting to wear on us," she wrote on her blog (via House Beautiful). Noticing how much she loved going to the job site daily, Jasmine left her fulltime job in social responsibility and dedicated her career to designing and building homes.
By 2012, she founded Built Custom Homes, and by the following year, their house was finished—and her company's first project was the house next door to their own.
7. Jasmine Roth's TV career almost started out by accident.
In 2015, Roth documented a custom home build in Park City, Utah, on her Instagram account, followed by another build on the beach in California, and the latter attracted the attention of HGTV.
"That first call was surreal. I’d never considered being on TV and knew nothing about it. I asked how they’d found me and was so surprised when they said… Instagram," she wrote on her blog (via House Beautiful). "I had less than 1,500 followers at the time, although I was posting away like I had a million."
While the first offer didn't pan out, the network encouraged her to send them footage for a sizzle reel. She paid out of pocket for a local camera crew to follow her on another project and send that footage to the network. HGTV was impressed enough to then send a crew and team of their own to film Roth for a sizzle reel. It went well: In July 2016, she became the star of Hidden Potential, then Help! I Wrecked My House.
8. She's a mother of two girls—and she became a parent on her own timeline.
Roth has two daughters, Hazel Lynn and Darla Rose Roth. Hazel was born in April 2020, seven years after Brett and Jasmine married, which she said was deliberate—even though it seemed late compared to the rest of the women in her family.
"The generations in my family are about 20 years apart. Everyone was a young parent, and we were able to do a lot of fun activities," she wrote in an essay for Business Insider. "But there were also challenges, including financial worries and emotional immaturity. My husband and I met when we were 20. We moved in together as college roommates and never moved out. When I looked at his family, which had larger generational gaps, I saw what I wanted: greater financial security and very intentional choices about parenthood."
As for having a baby at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Roth gushed to PEOPLE, "It’s a scary time to bring a child into the world when it feels like up is down and down is up, but as soon as we saw her precious face all the fear and anxiety melted away."
9. An injury led to Jasmine Roth's fertility journey.
Roth suffered a herniated disk that led her to undergo a lot of MRIs and tests to recover—and it helped her and her functional medicine doctor realize she had "second infertility," in that she wasn't healthy enough to support a second pregnancy.
Under close supervision from her care team, Roth learned she had genetic cardiovascular health issues, hormonal imbalances and childhood trauma to unpack and remedy before she could get pregnant again, she wrote in Motherly. The good news? It worked.
10. Her daughter Darla was born a month early on her anniversary—and almost came into the world on the side of the road!
Jasmine began having contractions on her 11th wedding anniversary on Sept. 7, 2024—a month earlier than her due date, and while she and Brett were driving in the mountains of Park City, Utah.
They pulled over and called 911, who said help was on the way, Jasmine wrote in an essay for PEOPLE. Paramedics soon arrived and laid down a tarp for her in case she delivered Darla on the side of the road and didn't make it to the hospital, but luckily, their little girl was able to wait just a little bit longer.

11. She instructed Brett to make sure he recorded and took photos of their journey to and in the hospital delivering Darla.
His response? "He rolled his eyes and shook his head," she recalled to PEOPLE.
12. She and Darla stayed in the hospital for 15 days after her birth.
Because Darla was born a month early, she weighed less than five pounds and required extra medical care and monitoring, including a feeding tube.
"When we finally were released from the hospital, it was a strange and obscure feeling," she wrote in part, adding, "But mostly we were excited! Our 4-year-old was allowed to visit the hospital, but not in the area her sister had been in. She had only seen her through a small window and we couldn’t wait for her to meet her new sister and hold her little hand. As we pulled up to our house, the emotions finally came. We had needed to be strong for our daughters, and we had been. But the relief that I felt walking through our door was overwhelming. Seeing Hazel meet Darla and love her immediately was the best feeling in the world."
13. They kept their daughters' names secret until after their births for a reason.
"We never tell anyone the name ahead of time because if we can settle on a name, we don’t want to take the chance of anyone ruining it for us,” she explained on Instagram. “Neither of us have ever known a ‘Darla’ so that was a good start! Let’s be honest, naming people is TOUGH!”
Choosing Hazel's name was tricky: She revealed in a Q&A with The Washington Post that she and Brett had a difficult time picking a name until a stranger with three sons that they chatted up at a restaurant gave them the idea for Hazel.
"At the end of the chat, the lady leaned over and said, 'We're done having kids and I never had a girl, so you can have our girl name, it's Hazel,'" Roth recalled. "CHILLS! My husband and I looked at each other and we both knew that was the name."
14. Roth is a proud dog mom, too.
She and Brett are dog lovers, and she made them a special nook in her home—and joked that one of her friends spent the night there once.
15. She's a published author.
Roth is the author of House Story: Insider Secrets to the Perfect Home Renovation, published in 2021. She joked to PEOPLE, "This has been years in the making and it answers all the questions I get asked every single day on social media, on email and even when people walk up to me at Target and ask for advice. How fun will it be when I can just point them toward the book aisle and keep on shopping. Ha!"

16. She's a business wizard.
Roth earned a degree in business degree in entrepreneurship and new venture management from Northeastern University in Boston.
17. Jasmine Roth lives in Park City, Utah.
After growing up in Virginia and studying in "Bahstahn," Brett and Jasmine Roth moved to southern California in 2008.
The couple left their custom-built dream home in Huntington Beach, California, for Old Town Park City, Utah, in summer 2024. Jasmine told HGTV there were several reasons for the move, the primary one being that she and Brett visited the city so often (including for their 2013 wedding!) that they fell in love with it.
Their new home is in the mountains, and Jasmine said she was excited to have all four seasons (a far cry from sunny SoCal). She also said she'd embrace a more neutral palette for the new space, inspired by the nature surrounding their new home. Hidden Potential and Help! I Wrecked My House will follow her to her new home state.
18. The spouse of another HGTV star helps Jasmine Roth keep fit.
In a Q&A with The Washington Post, Roth said that she works out with Mina Starsiak Hawk's husband, Steve. She also loves working out on her Peloton, snowboarding and yoga.
19. Her daughters have a "loft net" in their room.
Roth incorporated the now-famous feature in her and Brett's new Park City home. It can hold up to 2,000 pounds, so the family can seemingly float above their little girls' bedroom together safely. (It was installed by professionals—don't try this by yourself at home!)
20. Jasmine Roth looks exactly like her mom.
And we do mean exactly. It's uncanny!

21. Her design style changed since she became a mom.
Roth revealed to Realtor.com that she's embraced more practicality and functionality than purely stylistic designs since she welcomed Hazel.
"I think as parents, we’re so overstimulated, we’re so tired; and things that I thought worked in design before, I kind of find annoying now," she said. "I’ve definitely pared down my design in an almost minimalist way. I’ve taken out a lot of the clutter, I’ve taken out anything that’s not necessary."
She explained, "I don’t want to see as much decor. For example, I want a chair because I can sit in it, but if the pillow on the chair isn’t comfortable and I’m not using it, I don’t want the pillow on the chair anymore."
22. She has two comfy personal style staples.
When she's not rocking work clothes, Roth told Style Me Pretty that she lives in Lululemon leggings and Vans Old Skool sneakers. You can see her and Hazel rocking Vans in the cute family photo above!
23. Her mantra "Build Your Happy" signifies that finding and creating joy is an ongoing process.
"This 'Build Your Happy' mantra came about as we started thinking about happiness in general. It's kind of what we're all striving for; whether it's in a home renovation project, in our personal lives, in our career lives, or as parents, we're all just trying to be happy," she explained to Modern Luxury Interiors. "And what does that mean? And how do we accomplish that? And is that even realistic? Can you accomplish it, or is it more of a process? And so what I landed on is that just like building, it's always a process. And so building your happy is much more about celebrating the journey than it is about the destination. One of the ways that I really like to build my happy is by celebrating the wins—celebrating small moments that incrementally add up to this overall feeling of happiness."
24. Jasmine Roth knows building is a boys' club, and she's determined to change that.
Roth never expected to get into homebuilding and says that she never even really registered that being an electrician, plumber or builder was even an option for women. She's proud to be changing that landscape for girls in the next generation.
"The more that we see women in this industry, the more we're shining a spotlight on it," she told Modern Luxury Interiors. "I'm filling a role that not very many women are able to do at this point, just because it's not something that people are used to seeing, but the more that’s seen, the more it becomes normalized. My daughter is four years old, and in her world, women build houses. And they're in charge. And when we show up on the job site, she knows who's in charge. I love the idea of the next generation being able to watch my show, watch other HGTV shows and see that women can build houses."
25. Jasmine Roth believes one of the most important elements of design is making it personal—and you can do that for cheap.
Photos are key, Roth says.
"I believe that whether it's just a photo taped to the refrigerator, a small little frame from Target that [you] just put on your nightstand, I believe that every room should have some sort of personal photo, whether it's your family, whether it's your friends, whether it's your dog's nose, whether it's anything, really, a sunset," she told House Digest. "If it makes you happy and it makes you smile, it's going to be a win. And so if our houses are meant to make us happy, I believe that photos go a long way to reminding us what's important."
