Quick & Affordable Valentine's DIY: Red Chalkboard Plate

Chalkboard plates are super popular, simple to make, and the perfect, crafty gift/decoration. You can find vintage and inexpensive plates at your local thrift and dollar stores. Chalkboard plates look fabulous hanging on the wall, set on a a buffet table or party drink station, and they're a sweet hostess gift. This craft can be easily adjusted for just about any holiday! So, follow my how-to and have fun!

Since this chalkboard plate is red, I thought it would be perfect for Valentine's day!

Materials needed:

Supplies
  • Covered work surface
  • Plain white china plate
  • Quality 2 inch angled paint brush
  • 150 grit sand paper
  • Rubbling alcohol
  • Soft cloth
  • Plastic cup large enough to dip paint brush into
  • Plastic tablespoon
  • Water
  • Craft paint
  • Plaster of paris
  • Oven
  • Chalk

Chalk board paint recipe:

1 table spoon plaster of paris, 1 tablespoon hot water, 5 tablespoons craft paint.

How-to:

1. Gather your supplies on a covered work surface.
2. Lightly sand the center of your plate

3. Clean with rubbing alcohol and let dry
4. Mix up my chalkboard paint recipe in a plastic cup

5. Dip your angled brush into your paint and wipe off excess.
6. Paint the center of your plate with sweeping circular strokes. Only paint the center circle portion of your plate. Cover the entire inner circle portion of your plate with paint. Cover well and only one coat of paint is needed. If you really mess up. Wash plate with warm water. Dry and begin again.

7. Allow paint to dry 24hours.
8. After 24 hours of dry time, place your plate in a cool oven, set temp to 400 degrees, when oven is up to temperature, set timer for 30 mins and bake. After 30 mins of baking turn off oven and allow plate to completely cool in the oven. Do not remove from oven until cool.

9. When cool, cure your plate with chalk. Rub chalk over the entire chalkboard surface covering completely.

10. Then wipe off chalk with a soft cloth. This will keep future writing from remaining on your plate.

Clean and handle your painted plate with care, hand wash only, no dish washer, don't serve food on this one!
