Declutter Your Bedroom in 5 Steps

Mark Lohman 2007

Tackle the task of decluttering your bedroom with these practical, easy-to-follow steps.

  1. Prepare for Action. Bring in boxes for items that belong elsewhere and for items that may appeal to someone else. Use a trash bag for items to be tossed.
  2. Work Systematically. Do one area at a time. To tackle the bed zone, clear the nightstand and clean under the bed. Sort items into the boxes or trash bag. Repeat in other areas.
  3. Put Stuff Back. Deliver items from the “return” box to the rooms where they belong. Stash the donation box in the car to prompt quick action.
  4. Put Everything in Order. Return clothes to drawers. Arrange the tops of shelves, dressers, and nightstands. Store seasonal items under the bed.
  5. Keep it Going. Clean regularly to maintain the bedroom’s new sense of calm. And always make the bed; that large, clean surface may inspire you to avoid future clutter.
