Nestled between Dallas and Austin is President George W. Bush and his wife Laura's ranch in Crawford, Texas. Their home away from home, which was completed in 2001, was dubbed the "Wester White House" during the the 68-year-old's presidency and has been the backdrop for visits from world leaders and grandchildren alike.

When they designed the house with David Heymann, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture, "we wanted the house to fit into the landscape" the former First Lady tells Architectural Digest. The Bush's Crawford ranch, which graces the magazine's August cover, is a single-story limestone abode with flat lines that mimic the flat land it's built upon.
"We wanted to see and enjoy the beauty as much as possible," George said of the sweeping and unobstructed views, visible through large windows and open patios. "We wanted to see and enjoy the beauty as much as possible."
